The Child learns to judge the length, and alignment, by using the Long Rods or ‘Red Rods’. The Child uses sight, and touch, to work out what the difference is, between each individual rod. The smallest rod is 10 cm long, and increasing in length by 10 cm. There are a total of 10 rods, and the longest one is 1 meter long.
Features of the Long Rods
- the direct objective is for the Child to visually, and manually discern the difference in length, and alignment.
- indirectly, the Child will,
- learn how to discriminate the difference in the length of rods
- develop their fine, and gross motor muscles
- improve their bi-lateral coordination, by crossing the mid-line as they lay out the ‘stair’
- this activity is support material for the Montessori sensorial curriculum
